DTS Surround Sign

DTS Surround was for years the surround-sound alternative to the Dolby Digital standard — and differs from it most clearly in one respect: higher bitrate, less compression, audibly more headroom in the effects peaks. Introduced in 1993 with "Jurassic Park" as a cinema format, DTS shaped the DVD era and gave many home-cinema builders the impression that the DTS track on a DVD was a qualitative plus over the Dolby track — a debate the home-cinema community still keeps alive today.

A DTS Surround sign belongs in a room where the "Dolby or DTS?" discussion isn't closed but an ongoing question. Owners of DVD and Blu-ray collections who deliberately choose the DTS track when it's available. Home-cinema builders who hear the difference between a DD and a DTS mix — and name it.
