Dolby Digital was the technology that brought 5.1 surround into the cinema in 1992 — and into the living room with DVD a few years later. The AC-3 coding process delivered five full audio channels plus the low-frequency effects channel (LFE) in a commercially viable form for the first time — the birth of modern multi-channel home cinema. Even though Dolby Atmos sets the high-end standard today, home cinema in its current form wouldn't exist without Dolby Digital.

A Dolby Digital sign belongs in a room where the DVD era is honoured not as history but as foundation. Owners of an extensive DVD collection who still use the format daily. Home-cinema builders who understand that 5.1 wasn't a given before Atmos. Cinephiles who first understood what "home cinema" could really mean through Dolby Digital.
